Sonoma, CA - Reigning AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin headed a Suzuki GSX-R1000 one-two-three at today’s second AMA Superbike double-header at Sonoma in California as 12 of the top 20 finishers were mounted on the new 2005 K5-model Suzukis.

Five-time champion Mladin commanded the race from the start, winning by a massive 13 seconds from Yoshimura Suzuki team mate Aaron Yates with team newcomer Ben Spies third just 0.4 seconds down on Yates.

Mladin also set the fastest lap of the race, a 1:36.394, on the second lap.

Said Mladin, who also won Saturday’s Superbike race: “It was a good day for us. The Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 performed great again today. Dunlop tyres also brought us something different that worked well. I’d like to thank Yoshimura Suzuki, Dunlop and all my guys for coming through for us again this weekend.”

Thanks to strong qualifying on Saturday, the Yoshimura Suzuki team was gridded on the front row. Mladin claimed his 41st career pole position with a 1:36.019, Yates was in the third spot with a 1:37.116 and Spies snagged fourth with a 1:37.139.

“We just concentrated on race stuff as much as possible and we found something that we like a lot,” said Mladin about his qualifying session. Likewise, Yates and Spies also focused on fine-tuning their Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000s.

With the start of the weekend’s second 28-lap Superbike race, Mladin got away immediately and led every lap to claim his sixth win of the season and his 38th career victory.

“You’ve always got to push yourself because one day somebody may step up and push you. You don’t necessarily have to be racing someone to push yourself.”

Like Mladin, team mate Yates also got a good start. Initially, he was right behind Mladin and then fell back behind Spies into third. He stayed there for a number of laps before re-taking second place.

“Ben and I had a good ride, but I really wanted to finish in front,” said Yates from the podium. “We both got a good start and I thought we could tag along with Mat but he was a little quicker. Overall, I was pretty comfortable out there, my Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 was going good and I’m happy to have brought home second place.”

Meanwhile, Spies was close behind Yates at the start and diced with him for a number of laps before settling into third place.

“I’d really like to thank my team because they made a lot of changes to my bike between yesterday and today,” said Spies after the race. “It was kind of a weird race with Aaron because I was strong where he was weak and he was strong where I was weak so that made it really hard to pass.”

Team Yoshimura Suzuki heads for Colorado and Pikes Peak International Raceway next weekend for the next round of AMA Superbike.
